Indigenous knowledges and colonial sciences in South Asia

What do we mean when use the category ‘indigenous knowledges’? speak of ‘colonial sciences’? This Introduction briefly examines these questions in order to provide a context for collection articles presented this issue on making sciences colonial South Asia. In doing so, it also addresses related questions: The translation terms – does Sanskrit word śāstra correspond English science? If not, what each mean? And differences that arise categories move across disciplines development studies scholars term indigenous knowledges knowledge-forms original inhabitants territory; historians Asia and science refer older forms knowledge lost rule.The contributors represent very different anthropology, history, history Indology; bring variety methodological approaches they address.
